A Short Guide to Matcha in Barcelona

Where the city takes Japanese tea seriously — and where a matcha latte is simply very good.

Matcha reached Barcelona properly only in the last few years, and the city responded in its own way: not with volume, but with a handful of small, specific places run by people who care where the leaf comes from.

A note on ordering. Ceremonial grade is made to be drunk with water; culinary grade is built for milk. If you are unsure, ask which grade is in the cup — the good places will tell you without hesitation.

Dedicated matcha bars

  • Matcha Crew

    Eixample & Gràcia

A matcha-first café with a site on Carrer de València and a second on Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia — arguably the easiest introduction in the city.

  • Matcha Gracias

    Gràcia

A small matcha bar and tea shop in Gràcia. Come for the drink, leave with tins for the kitchen.

  • SAISEI

    Eixample & Diagonal

Two addresses, matcha sourced from Uji in Kyoto, alongside specialty coffee, focaccia and vegan pastries.

  • Bonsai Coffee & Matcha

    Eixample

Ceremonial Japanese matcha served next to a proper coffee programme — useful when you are not all drinking the same thing.

Japanese tea, in the traditional register

  • Usagui

    Barcelona

A Japanese-run tea and coffee shop known for its matcha latte and homemade Japanese cakes. Quiet, precise, and closer to a tea room than a café.

Where to drink it slowly

Matcha rewards an unhurried half hour. Gràcia in the late morning is the right register for it — Plaça de la Vila and the streets around it are made for sitting still.

If you are pairing it with movement, most of the reformer studios in Eixample and Gràcia are a short walk from at least one of the addresses above.

A good matcha, a walk, and one honest conversation is close to our definition of a well-spent Barcelona morning.
