Where to Eat Well in Barcelona, Without Ceremony

Vegetable-forward kitchens, specialty coffee counters and the brunch tables worth the wait.

Barcelona eats late, generously and with very little anxiety about it. The city's wellness cafés have adapted to that rather than fighting it: plates are vegetable-forward, but nobody is counting anything out loud.

This is where we take people who want to eat well here without turning lunch into a project.

Vegetable-forward kitchens

  • Flax & Kale

    El Raval

The flagship on Carrer de Tallers, near Plaça Catalunya. A large, light, industrial room and a flexitarian menu built around plants and fish.

  • Teresa Carles Healthy Foods

    Ciutat Vella

The older sister of Flax & Kale and one of the pioneers of vegetable-led Catalan cooking in the city. Quieter, warmer, and reliable for a long lunch.

  • Woki Organic Market

    Eixample

An organic market and café on Ronda de la Universitat — as useful for stocking a kitchen as for a weekday plate.

Coffee, taken seriously

Specialty coffee arrived in Barcelona later than in northern Europe and has matured quickly. These are counters where the roast, not the interior, is the point.

  • Nomad Coffee

    Ciutat Vella & Poblenou

A Barcelona roaster with several small sites, including the original Coffee Bar on Passatge Sert and a larger space in Poblenou.

  • Satan's Coffee Corner

    Gothic Quarter & Eixample

A city institution, with the original tucked into the Call and a second counter inside Casa Bonay on Gran Via.

  • Little Fern

    Poblenou

A New Zealand-style café on Carrer de Pere IV. Antipodean coffee culture and one of the better brunch menus east of the centre.

For a long, unhurried brunch

  • Federal Café

    Sant Antoni

Australian-inspired brunch in one of the city's most walkable neighbourhoods. A rooftop terrace and a habit of long Sunday mornings.

  • Alsur Café

    Eixample

The Roger de Llúria site is the calmest of the group — vegetarian-leaning, generous, and central without being touristic.

  • Brunch & Cake

    Eixample

The Enric Granados address sits on the city's most pleasant pedestrian street. Expect a queue at weekends; go on a weekday.
